Post-war house with protected tree, Buckinghamshire
This project started as a phone call, asking if it was possible to build a conservatory under a protected oak tree. On a visit to the house we realised the planning of the house and garden was a mess, with a garage built in the garden. Entering the house where the cars were parked meant going through patio doors. The front door facing the street was rarely used.
Our idea that unlocked our client's problem was to re-orientate the house, with a re-positioned entrance under a new carport, giving shelter from the weather. We also demolished the existing garage to create a new garden. To overcome the problem of building under a protected tree, we proposed a new garden room away from the tree roots, and linked this to a new office with a pergola. A new entrance courtyard was created which enhanced the character of what was a rather mundane post-war house.
